Carnelian

Carnelian is a stone with red tones that give it this unique character. Its uniform and translucent appearance differs from Red Jasper.

 

Origin

Carnelian stone owes its name to the Latin word “carneolus” which means “appearance of the flesh” referring to its red tones. The most popular Carnelians come from India, mainly from the region of Pune, we find this stone in other places of extractions such as Brazil, Mali or the United States.

Composition

Carnelian belongs to the family of chalcedony like Agates, Jasper or Onyx. It is mainly composed of silica and aluminum oxides. Its red colour is provided by iron oxide. Its hardness is about 7 Mohs.
