Origin 

The name Onyx comes from the Greek "Onux" which means fingernail. This stone was commonly used in making seals in Roman times. She has the particularity of not sticking to the wax. Extracted in Brazil, Mexico or Russia, Onyx experienced a new boom during the reign of the Queen of England.

Composition

Onyx belongs to the mineral family of silicates. It is composed of silicon dioxide, it is a variety of chalcedony. Its hardness is 7 on the scale of Mohs, it has a specific gravity of 2.65. It is a black opaque stone, but some varieties may reveal white stripes. Following various treatments, onyx can turn red or yellow.
